When does ChatGPT reset in 2026: text chat has no cap to reset on any plan since 6 August 2026; what remains is a rolling 5-hour Codex and ChatGPT Work window on Plus plus an independent weekly allowance. Rolling windows, not clock times.

When Does ChatGPT Reset? (Plus, Pro, Free)

Since 2026-08-06, text chats no longer have a cap to reset - OpenAI removed message limits from text conversations on every ChatGPT plan. What still resets: image, file, voice, and Deep Research allowances, and since 2026-08-26 the rolling 5-hour Codex and ChatGPT Work windows on Plus. Everything that resets does so on rolling windows anchored to your first use of the cycle - never at midnight, never on Sunday. Here is how the current resets work, and how the old Plus, Free, and Thinking resets used to behave.

The short answer

Direct answer

Ordinary text chat has no cap to reset on any plan. What still resets does so on rolling windows that start with your first use of the cycle, never at a clock time.

Since 6 August 2026 text conversations are uncapped on Free, Go, Plus and Pro. The allowances that remain are Codex and ChatGPT Work, which on Plus run a rolling 5-hour window alongside an independent weekly allowance, plus separate budgets for images, file uploads, voice and deep research. Hitting either the 5-hour or the weekly limit pauses included usage until that particular window resets. Nothing resets at midnight or on Sunday - each window has its own start time.

Your next reset time, in your local timezone

If you started a brand new cycle right now, here is when each of ChatGPT's caps would reset, computed in your local timezone:

Reset calculator
…
Codex / ChatGPT Work 5-hour from your first request of the cycle - Plus
…
Weekly allowance runs independently of the 5-hour window
…

These are projections assuming you start each window right now. Your actual reset times depend on when each cycle began. Ordinary text chat is not listed because it no longer has a cap. ChatGPT does not show a percentage or an exact reset time anywhere - the only signal is the relative time in the "try again in X" message you see when you hit a limit.

The windows ChatGPT uses

Text chat is not on this list any more, and that is the single most important thing to know: since 6 August 2026 there is no message cap to reset on Free, Go, Plus or Pro. The windows that remain belong to Codex and ChatGPT Work, and to the separate media and research allowances. On Plus the 5-hour window and the weekly allowance run at the same time and independently, so you can be stopped by either one.

Window Length Starts when Resets when Plans
Text chat No window - Nothing to reset Free, Go, Plus, Pro
Codex / ChatGPT Work 5 hours Your first request of the cycle Exactly 5h after start Plus, Business Standard
Weekly allowance 7 days Your first request of the week Exactly 7d after start Plus, Pro, Business
GPT-6 Pro in Chat 7 days Your first GPT-6 Pro message of the week Exactly 7d after start Pro ($100: 50/wk, $200: 200/wk)
Images, uploads, voice, deep research Varies First use of that allowance When that window completes All paid plans

On Plus, the 5-hour Codex window is the one heavy users actually hit: a long coding session can chew through it in an afternoon. The weekly allowance is the one that surprises people, because it accumulates quietly in the background and only announces itself when it stops you. Published per-5-hour ranges for GPT-6 Astra sit at roughly 5-45 requests on Plus and Business Standard, 25-225 on Pro at $100 and 100-900 on Pro at $200, with Business Premium exempt from the 5-hour gate; the spread is wide because a request's cost depends on the work it does. For the full mechanics of each allowance see how ChatGPT's limits really work in 2026.

How rolling windows actually work

A rolling window starts the moment you send your first message of the current cycle and ends exactly N hours or days later. It does not snap to clock boundaries. It does not align with other users' windows. It does not align with calendar days.

Worked example on Plus: you send your first Codex request of the cycle on a Tuesday at 2:18 PM. Your 5-hour window now runs until 7:18 PM the same day. If you exhaust the allowance at 6:55 PM, it stays locked until 7:18 PM - 23 minutes of waiting. Exhaust it at 2:30 PM and you still wait until 7:18 PM, nearly five hours. The start time of the window determines how long you wait, not the moment you run out.

The weekly allowance is the same shape on a much longer timer, and it runs independently. First request of the week on a Monday at 9:42 AM, and the weekly window runs until the following Monday at 9:42 AM. Exhaust the weekly allowance on Thursday at 4:18 PM and waiting for your 5-hour window to roll over will not help you - the weekly one is what is stopping you, and it does not lift until Monday. Anyone planning around a Sunday-night reset finds that it simply does not happen.

This is the source of the most common misconception about ChatGPT's limits: people plan around clock-based resets that do not exist. The two questions to anchor on are when did this window start and therefore when does it end. The catch with ChatGPT is that you cannot easily answer the first question - more on that below.

When the cap will not reset early

Things people sometimes hope will reset ChatGPT's caps but do not:

  • Refreshing the page or signing out and back in. The cap is server-side. The relative countdown you see when you hit it is your real countdown, and refreshing only updates the display. Logging out does not pause the rolling window.
  • Switching from chatgpt.com to the mobile app or the desktop app. All ChatGPT surfaces share the same usage pool on your account. Moving between them does not give you a fresh budget.
  • Switching to a different model. Changing model or using a Custom GPT does not reset a Codex or Work allowance. Model-specific budgets, such as GPT-6 Pro in Chat, sit on top of the main allowance rather than replacing it.
  • Starting a new conversation. These allowances are account-level, not conversation-level. A new chat does not give you a new budget.

Two things that do change the picture:

  • Upgrading from Plus to Pro. Pro raises the per-5-hour range substantially and, for the time being, is exempt from the 5-hour gate altogether. OpenAI has said that exemption is temporary, and it has never meant unlimited weekly usage - the weekly allowance still applies.
  • Time passing. The only mechanism that resets a ChatGPT cap is the rolling window completing. Nothing accelerates it. The actionable lever is pacing, not waiting smarter.

What peak hours mean for the reset (they don't)

The reset itself is mechanical. Five hours is five hours regardless of how loaded OpenAI's cluster is. Peak hours - roughly 9 AM to 5 PM US Pacific time - do not affect when your window resets.

What does change during peak hours is the experience inside the window. On peak hours you see more "ChatGPT is at capacity" errors, slower responses, and more failed image generations or tool calls that have to be retried. A retry spends allowance twice for the same outcome. The window itself does not bend; only the friction inside it does. Running the same work at 6 AM PT or 9 PM PT gets smoother responses for the same budget.

Where to see your real reset time (the catch)

This is the biggest difference between Claude and ChatGPT. Claude publishes your exact reset time in Settings > Usage, in your local timezone, before you hit the cap. ChatGPT does not. OpenAI exposes no equivalent surface. The only signal you get is the relative countdown in the "try again in X hours" error message that appears the moment you hit the cap.

The practical workarounds, ordered by friction:

  • Count your own requests. Published per-5-hour ranges for Plus sit at roughly 5-45 Codex requests, so you can estimate when you are getting close. Two catches: the range is wide because cost depends on the work each request does, and OpenAI adjusts these numbers without notice. You are estimating against a moving target.
  • Use a tracker that watches for you. A menu-bar app like tokn.watch reads your existing chatgpt.com session and shows the rolling-window progress in your menu bar without you having to count. The reset countdown sits in your peripheral vision so you do not have to remember to check.
  • Wait for the error and read the relative time. The "you can send more messages in 2 hours, 14 minutes" message is your only authoritative reset signal once you have hit the cap. Add that to the wall-clock time when you see it and you have your reset time. The downside: you have already hit the cap, which means you are already mid-disruption.

One related quirk: Claude does this differently

If you came from a Claude background and expected ChatGPT to expose the same Settings > Usage page, it doesn't. Both products use rolling windows, but Anthropic publishes the percentage and exact reset time while OpenAI publishes nothing until you hit the cap. The mechanics are similar; the transparency is not. For the full side-by-side see Claude vs ChatGPT limits, side by side in 2026.

Frequently asked questions

When does ChatGPT reset?

Since 2026-08-06, text chats no longer have a cap to reset on any ChatGPT plan. What still resets does so on rolling windows: image, file, voice, and Deep Research allowances, and on Plus the 5-hour Codex and ChatGPT Work windows (since 2026-08-26), each anchored to your first use of the cycle - never at midnight, never on Sunday. Under the old system, the Plus 3-hour window reset 3 hours after your first message, Free's 5-hour window 5 hours after the downgrade trigger, and the Thinking weekly cap 7 days after your first Thinking message.

Does ChatGPT reset at midnight?

No - nothing in ChatGPT resets at midnight, and since 2026-08-06 text chats have no cap at all. The remaining allowances (images, files, Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions) use rolling windows anchored to your first use. Under the old system, Plus used a rolling 3-hour window, Free a rolling 5-hour window, and Thinking a rolling 7 days. Users who plan around a midnight reset find that the cap simply does not lift at that time - the rolling window has to complete, and that depends on when you started the cycle, not on what time the clock shows.

How do I know when my ChatGPT will reset?

(Since 2026-08-06 this applies only to the remaining allowances - images, files, Codex sessions - because text chat is uncapped.) ChatGPT only tells you when you hit a cap. When that happens you see a message like "You've reached our limit of messages. Please try again later" or "You can send more messages in 2 hours, 14 minutes." That relative time is the only signal OpenAI gives you. Unlike Claude, there is no Settings > Usage page that shows the percentage or the exact reset time before you hit the cap. The practical workarounds are to count your own messages, or run a tracker like tokn.watch that does it for you.

Is ChatGPT Pro really unlimited or does it reset too?

Almost unlimited. OpenAI markets Pro as having no message caps on advanced features, and for one human doing real work it is effectively uncapped. But Pro's terms include a fair-use clause that throttles unusually heavy automated workloads, shared accounts, and bot-like patterns. If you trip the throttle, the reset behaves like a soft cap - you wait some hours and the throttle lifts. The old Thinking weekly cap was retired on 2026-08-06 along with the manual Thinking mode, and Pro is exempt from the 5-hour Codex/ChatGPT Work windows that returned for Plus in August 2026. So "no resets" is accurate for normal use; "never resets" is not.

What is the ChatGPT Thinking weekly reset?

(Retired: OpenAI removed this cap and the manually-selected Thinking mode on 2026-08-06; reasoning is now a thinking-effort setting.) The Thinking reasoning model had its own weekly cap, separate from the Plus message window of the time - reported at around 3,000 messages per rolling 7-day window on Plus, resetting 7 days after your first Thinking message of the week. Heavy reasoning workloads hit this faster than people expect because each Thinking message counts the same regardless of how short the prompt was. There is no early warning - you find out you have hit the weekly cap by sending the message that takes you over and seeing the error.

Does the ChatGPT Free tier reset every day?

Since 2026-08-06 Free users get unlimited text chats on GPT-5.6 Luna - there is no text reset to wait for at all. Image, file, and voice allowances still reset on rolling windows. Under the old system, Free used a rolling 5-hour window: hitting the cap silently downgraded you to GPT-4o mini until the window reset, 5 hours after the message that triggered the downgrade - never at midnight.

Why didn't ChatGPT reset when I expected?

(Since 2026-08-06 this applies to the remaining allowances such as images and Codex sessions, not text chat.) Two common causes. First, the rolling window has not actually completed yet - the relative time ChatGPT showed you ("try again in 2 hours") is the truth, and any earlier estimate is wrong. Second, your first request of the new cycle starts a new window immediately, so if you send one at 4:00 PM the moment the allowance opens, your next 5-hour window now ends at 9:00 PM. There is no separate countdown that runs even when you are not using ChatGPT - the window is anchored on use, not on calendar time.

Do Codex, Custom GPTs, and Operator share the ChatGPT reset?

No longer for text: since 2026-08-06 text conversations are uncapped on every surface, Custom GPTs included. Codex and ChatGPT Work sessions on Plus run on their own rolling 5-hour windows since 2026-08-26, and image generation keeps its own daily cap. Under the old system, all surfaces drew from one Plus 3-hour pool, with a separate Thinking weekly cap on top. The single pool is why heavy Custom-GPT use can eat your Plus budget without you noticing - you are paying for each step under the hood.

Last updated: 2026-09-20. On 2026-08-06 OpenAI removed message caps from text chats on every ChatGPT plan, retiring the Plus 3-hour, Free 5-hour, and Thinking weekly resets this article originally described. What still resets: image, file, voice, and Deep Research allowances, and since 2026-08-26 the rolling 5-hour Codex/ChatGPT Work windows on Plus, alongside an independent weekly allowance - all anchored to first use, never to clock times. On 2026-09-20 the body of the article was rewritten to match: the earlier pass had corrected the summary and the FAQ but left the reset calculator, the windows table and the worked examples still describing the retired 3-hour cap as current. Historical references to the old windows are retained and labelled as such.
